It’s been an interesting few weeks around here. Most recently we’ve been updating some of our equipment and it been a whole new kind of fun. Last Friday, Jim got one of these:
It turns out that this is the coolest gadget we’ve ever had! It’s got a touchscreen mixing station – you need more vocals, or want change the side of the stage it sounds like the singer is on, you drag them around on the screen. Your band-mates constantly whine about their monitor settings? Connect this thing to a network and they can access it with an iPhone app that will let them control their own monitor mix.
On top of that, it can record individual tracks for the stuff you plug into it – with an SD card, thumb drive or external hard drive, you can record your performances at the track level, take them over to a workstation and master and mix them, and presto – you have become your own sound engineer. If you want to know what your band really sounds like, listen to the raw files that get saved before the mixer tweaks them up for you… yes it can tweak them for you so that you can play back your recordings almost as if they’ve already been mastered.
This thing isn’t going to replace sound engineers but in our case, it’s certainly made it easier to mix our sound and easier for all of us to control what we hear on stage, and the immediate feedback option of playing back rehearsal tracks is pretty cool… like this.
